The Emerging Spiral
An Exploration of Human Development
While I was pursuing my Master's degree at Andover Newton Theological School I took a course on the psychology of faith and human development. As my final project for that class I created this website in December of 1996. The Emerging Spiral: An Exploration of Human Development is my effort to integrate conventional psychological and pastoral theory, with alternative esoteric information; this website provides an examination of human development from both perspectives.
Please be aware that this website provides only a most basic overview of Robert Kegan's and James Fowler's works. I offer these examples as sources for understanding, however I do not in any way wish to imply that this site is conclusive.
Though Kegan and Fowler's stages of development tend to fall together in general ways and Fowler's seven stages are frequently associated with Kegan's six, they do not provide exact correlations with each other.
And while I have drawn from Kegan's Table 7: Forms and Functions of embeddedness cultures (p.118-120: The Evolving Self) as a model for the Components of Embeddedness that I feature on the pages describing his stages. I have made some changes in order to convey my points more effectively
If you are interested in learning more about either of these men's work I suggest that you explore some of the books they wrote.
