The Imperial Self

Mask Kids

I am my needs

Moving beyond the nuclear family, the child now ventures towards relationships and role differentiation with the new authorities and peer groups of school. With increased capacity for rational distinction s/he is frequently aware of cause and effect. Thus, the child begins to manipulate his/her behavior to achieve desired results.

The child of the imperial stage is motivated exclusively by their own desires, needs, dreams, wishes and interests. Bargaining is a primary component of this stage and actions are usually based on the premise of you scratch my back; I'll scratch yours!
