With increased capacity for rational distinction s/he is frequently aware of cause and effect. Thus, the child begins to manipulate his/her behavior to achieve desired results.
The child of the imperial stage is motivated exclusively by their own desires, needs, dreams, wishes and interests. Bargaining is a primary component of this stage and actions are usually based on the premise of you scratch my back; I'll scratch yours!
